September 25, 2012: China’s first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, officially entered service, increasing regional tensions over Beijing’s growing territorial ambitions

September 26, 1957: The stage musical West Side Story, by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, had its world premiere in New York. The film version (above) opened in 1961

September 27, 1960: Europe’s first moving walkway opened at Bank Underground station in London, six years after the first U.S. version was installed at a station in New Jersey

September 28, 1894: Polish immigrant Michael Marks and Englishman Tom Spencer opened a “Penny Bazaar”. It grew into the major British multinational company Marks and Spencer

September 29, 1997: U.S. artist Roy Lichtenstein died. A founder of the Pop Art movement of the 60s, his work was heavily influenced by popular advertising and comic books

September 30, 1949: The 15-month Berlin Airlift, in which U.S. and British planes countered a Soviet blockade by delivering over two million tons of supplies to Berlin, ended

October 1, 1890: The Yosemite National Park was created in California to protect the Yosemite Valley and surrounding mountains and forests from development
