EU backs tougher travel rules for Russians

September 1, 2022 - The EU has decided to make it more expensive and complex for Russians to obtain visas to travel to the bloc, but stopped short of an outright ban that Ukraine and five member states had called for.

The EU was too divided to agree at this stage on a blanket ban, and also left unclear what unilateral measures Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Finland, which have land borders with Russia, could take to restrict access to Russian visitors, Reuters said.

EU ministers also tasked the European Commission with looking into possible ways to tackle the estimated 12 million visas issued to Russian citizens that are still in circulation, according to Euronews.

According to data from Frontex, the EU’s border control agency, almost a million Russians have legally entered the 27-member bloc via land borders since the start of the Ukraine war in February, mostly through Finland and the Baltic states.
