Europe seeking alternatives to Russian gas supply

August 31, 2022 - European countries have been seeking to find alternative supplies to replace Russian gas after the Kremlin slashed flows through the key Nord Stream 1 pipeline to 20 percent of capacity in July.

Russia has also cut off supply to several European countries such as Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Poland, and reduced flows via other pipelines since launching what Moscow calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine, according to Reuters.

Russia typically supplies about 40 percent of Europe’s natural gas, mostly by pipeline. Deliveries last year were around 155 billion cubic metres, Reuters said.
