Situation report day 189

By Jordi Bou

August 31, 2022 - Fierce battles have been reported as Ukraine tries to retake the Russian-occupied Kherson region, while a team of UN experts set off from Kyiv towards the Zaporizhya nuclear plant.

Ukraine's counter-offensive has destroyed Russian control points, weapons and warehouses in Kherson, according to the Ukrainian military. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said “heavy fighting” continues in “almost the entire territory” of Kherson.

Meanwhile a team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are travelling to the Zaporizhya nuclear power plant to inspect for damage after shelling nearby sparked fears of a radiation disaster.
