Situation report day 188

By Jordi Bou

August 30, 2022 - President Zelenskiy has urged Russian troops to flee for their lives as his forces launched an offensive near the city of Kherson, reportedly breaking through Russia's first line of defence in several sectors of the frontline.

A Ukrainian military source told CNN that its forces have taken back four villages near the city of Kherson after breaking through the frontline in three places, with the main “target” being Kherson.
The operation began with heavy shelling of Russian positions and the rear, forcing them to flee, the source was quoted as saying.

Ukraine's offensive in the south comes after weeks of a stalemate in a war that has killed thousands, displaced millions, destroyed cities and caused a global energy and food crisis amid unprecedented economic sanctions.

It has also fuelled worries of a radiation disaster being triggered by shelling of the south Ukraine Zaporizhya Nuclear Power Plant, which a team of inspectors from the IAEA is expected to visit from Wednesday to Saturday.
