Situation report day 175

By Phil Bainbridge

August 17, 2022 - Russia has said Ukrainian sabotage is responsible for a series of explosions in Crimea at an airbase and major railway hub, forcing the suspension of all trains to Russia.

Russia has also blamed Ukraine for explosions at a railway and the destruction of six electricity pylons from the Kursk nuclear power plant within Russia. A record number of cars were recorded yesterday on the Crimea Bridge linking occupied Crimea with the Russian mainland as Russian tourists appear to be fleeing the conflict.

Russian troops have advanced near Bakhmut and appear to have taken control of the KNAUF factory near Soledar, while heavy fighting in Sviati
Hory Park on the east bank of Siverskyi Donets River near Slovyansk appears to indicate that Ukrainian forces have crossed the river to engage with the Russians.

Finland is set to limit the number of visas issued to Russians to enter the EU after a rush of tourists using Helsinki airport as a gateway to European holiday destinations. Meanwhile Estonia has cancelled up to 50,000 visas.
