September 4, 1957: The governor of Arkansas ordered National Guard troops to turn away nine black students trying to enter a formerly whites-only high school in Little Rock

September 5, 1972: “Black September” terrorists attacked Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics. The attack left 11 Israelis, five assailants and a German policeman dead

September 6, 1522: The Victoria, captained by Juan Sebastian Del Cano following the death of Magellan, returned to Seville after completing the first circumnavigation of the world

September 7, 1822: Brazil proclaimed independence from Portugal, with Pedro I soon declared Emperor. It became a presidential republic in 1889 following a military coup

September 8, 2016: Genetic analysis revealed that the giraffe genus contained four separate species, that had not exchanged genetic information between them for 1-2 million years
