Al-Qaeda leader killed in U.S. drone strike

August 2, 2022 - The United States has killed top al-Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, in a drone strike in Afghanistan. Al-Zawahiri was believed to be a co-planner of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S.

Zawahiri was killed in a counter-terrorism operation carried out by the CIA in the Afghan capital Kabul on July 31. It was the biggest blow to the militant group since its founder Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. special forces in 2011.

Zawahiri had been in hiding for years and the operation to locate and kill him was the result of “careful patient and persistent” work by the counter-terrorism and intelligence community, according to Reuters.
