August 21, 1942: The Battle of Stalingrad began. The giant Motherland Calls statue commemorates the Soviet victory in the six-month battle, the Nazis’ first major defeat of WWII

August 22, 1812: Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt discovered the city of Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, that had lain hidden for the best part of a millennium

August 23, 1999: Berlin resumed its role as the capital of a united Germany for the first time since the end of World War II after parliament completed its return from Bonn

August 24, 2021: Charlie Watts, drummer with the Rolling Stones, died aged 80. He, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were the only members to perform on all of the band’s studio albums
