Situation report day 149

By Duncan Mil

July 22, 2022 - Russian artillery pounded Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, striking a market, mosque and medical centre on the 149th day of the invasion.

Local officials claim that cluster bombs hit the crowded Barabashovo Market, killing at least three people and injuring some 23 others. Shelling also struck a bus stop, a gym and a residential building.

“The Russian army is randomly shelling Kharkiv, peaceful residential areas. Civilians are being killed,” Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said.

Elsewhere, invading forces conducted minor attacks around Slovyansk’s eastern city and the Siversk and Bakhmut areas but failed to capture any significant ground. Ukrainian forces control the strategic heights and forested terrain surrounding Slovyansk, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a think tank based in Washington.

Analysts at ISW said the Russian offensive in Donetsk was likely to stall before reaching Sloviansk and Bakhmut. “Russian troops are now struggling to move across relatively sparsely settled and open terrain. They will encounter terrain much more conducive to the Ukrainian defenders,” their ISW concluded.

Richard Moore, chief of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), known as MI6, also estimated the Russians “are about to run out of steam” in Ukraine.

“They will have to pause in some way, and that will give the Ukrainians opportunities to strike back,” Moore said.

He also estimated that about 15,000 Russian troops had been killed in its war in Ukraine, adding that was “probably a conservative estimate.”

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces using U.S.-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, destroyed six Russian ammunition depots and a command post in the Kherson, Beryslav, and Kakhova areas of Kherson Oblast. Seven modified Russian S-300 anti-air missiles hit the southern city of Mykolaiv overnight.
