Farnborough orders and options

By Duncan Mil

July 20, 2022 - An Air India blockbuster deal at the Farnborough International Airshow hangs in the balance, with arch-rivals Airbus and Boeing battling for a share of a $50 billion upgrade order for up to 370 jets.

According to Reuters, officials from Airbus and Boeing visited India last week in pursuit of a combined order for 200-300 narrow-bodies and 30-70 wide-body jets. The deal would be worth some $50 billion at list prices but likely to come in at $20-25 billion after industry discounts.

Airbus is trailing its U.S. rival Boeing in the orders battle, clinching a $1.1-billion order for 12 Airbus A220-300 airliners from Delta Airlines on Tuesday (July 19, 2022). So far, Airbus has received 20 orders and 162 options worth around $14.5 billion at list prices.

The European planemaker is behind Boeing’s haul of 178 orders and 76 options worth an estimated $26.8 billion. Boeing kicked off the airshow, clinching a $13.5-billion deal for its crisis-hit 737 MAX from Delta Airlines. The U.S. carrier ordered 100 medium-haul 737 MAX 10 jets with an option for 30 more. Japan’s All Nippon Airways agreed to buy 20 MAX 8 jets worth $2.4 billion.

Tuesday saw 777 partners agree to an $8 billion deal for 30 MAX 8-200s with options for 36 more. The MAX 8-200 increases the single-aisle aircraft’s seating capacity for use in the low-cost market.

Brazil’s Embraer has deals for 46 aircraft with options for a further 58, potentially packing its order book with $9.4 billion of sales.

ATR, a joint venture between Airbus and Italian aerospace group Leonardo, has ten firm orders and 36 options worth around $820 million at list prices.
