Race to become next UK prime minister

July 12, 2022 - The successor to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be chosen by Conservative Party members, who will whittle down the list of candidates to a final runoff between two contenders.

Candidates putting themselves forward for the leadership must be nominated by at least 20 Conservative members of parliament, or MPs.

Voting begins on Wednesday, with candidates needing 30 backers to make it into the second round.

Conservative MPs then hold successive rounds of votes to whittle down the field. This process is repeated until there are two candidates remaining. The final two are then put to a postal ballot of the wider Conservative Party membership, with the winner becoming the next Prime Minister.
