“Stranger Things 4” surpasses one billion hours viewed

By Ninian Carter

July 6, 2022 - The embattled streaming service has seen a marked rise in viewing figures thanks to the latest instalment in its “Stranger Things” franchise.

“Stranger Things 4” has became the first English-speaking TV show to surpass one billion hours viewed in its first 28 days on Netflix.

Since the first instalments of the season dropped on May 27, viewers have spent a cumulative 1.15 billion hours watching its nine episodes, including 301 million hours since July 1, when the final two movie-length episodes landed.

It was in Netflix’s Top 10 in 93 different countries last weekend, and is currently so popular that it’s boosting the older seasons too – all four Stranger Things seasons were in Netflix’s six most-watched shows list from June 27-July 3.

These statistics make Stranger Things 4 the second most-watched Netflix season ever. South Korea’s non-English “Squid Game: Season 1” (2021) remains Netflix’s most popular international hit with 1.65 billion hours viewed in its first 28 days.

However, Stranger Things 4 may yet surpass Squid Game, as its final two episodes still have a few weeks left in which to rack-up viewing figures that would count as being within 28 days.

With one final season of Stranger Things to go, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have confirmed plans for a spin-off series, although it will feature all-new characters and be “1,000 percent different” to the current show.
