Ukraine war situation report – day 132

By Phil Bainbridge

July 5, 2022 - Declaring a major victory for Russia in its war with Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin has ordered his troops to rest and recover following the capture of the city of Lysychansk in Luhansk Oblast.

Both sides suffered heavy casualties in the 90-day battle. Russian forces have been fortifying their positions in the city, and beginning the process of establishing administrative control, replacing the Ukrainian local government with Russian military administration.

Russia now sets its sights on the Donetsk Oblast, the second of the two regions that make up the Donbas area of eastern Ukraine which Russia promised to “liberate” when it began the war in February. Russian forces are attempting to advance on several fronts - from Izyum, Bakhmut and Donetsk - to encircle Ukrainian troops within Donetsk Oblast.
