July 24, 1938: Swiss firm Nestlé introduced Nescafé instant coffee to help solve Brazil’s coffee surplus problem

July 25, 1959: The hovercraft made its first crossing of the English Channel. The SR-N1 crossed from Calais to Dover in two hours, with inventor Christopher Cockerell on board

July 26, 1952: Eva Peron, celebrated first lady of Argentina, died of cancer at the age of 33. Often referred to as Evita, she championed women’s suffrage and labour rights

July 27, 1949: The first commercial jet airliner, Britain’s De Havilland Comet, made its maiden flight. It had to be redesigned in 1954 after suffering three crashes due to metal fatigue

July 28, 1858: The first use of fingerprints as a means of identification was made by William Herschel in India. He asked a businessman to impress his hand print on a contract

July 29 1030: Norway’s patron saint, Olaf II, was killed in battle while attempting to recover his throne from the Danes

July 30 1792: La Marseillaise, by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle and later adopted as the French national anthem, was first sung in Paris by revolutionaries marching on Louis XVI’s Tuileries palace
