WORLD AGENDA

World events scheduled for July

By Jordi Bou

July 1, 2022 - July 31, 2022 - Each month Graphic News publishes a World Agenda of forthcoming events that will shape the world in the month ahead. Events in July include President Biden’s visit to the Middle East, the swearing in of Hong Kong’s new Chief Executive, the ban on single-use plastics in India, and the release of the first images taken by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

Jul 1, India: A ban on single-use plastics, including bottles and bags, straws, coffee stirrers, food packaging and other items that cannot easily be recycled, comes into force.

Jul 1, Hong Kong: John Lee will be sworn in as Chief Executive as the global financial hub struggles to stay competitive amid strict Covid policies and the Beijing-imposed national security law.

Jul 1, Australia: From today, cat owners in Canberra face a fine of up to A$300 (around $200) if their cat is found outdoors without a leash, under new rules to protect Australian native wildlife.

Jul 12, U.S.: NASA releases the first images taken by the James Webb Space Telescope, which will help answer questions about the earliest moments of the universe.

July 13-16, Middle East: U.S. President Joe Biden visits Israel, the West Bank and Saudi Arabia, where relations have been strained since the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but rising fuel prices have convinced the U.S. that now is not a good time to freeze the Saudis out.

Jul 18-22, UK: The Farnborough International Airshow, a global platform for the aviation and defence industries, returns for the first time since 2018, when deals worth $192bn were made.

Jul 24-31, France: The Tour de France Femmes, the first multi-stage women’s Tour since the 1980s, starts on the Champs-Élysées alongside the final stage of the men’s race.

July, Nigeria: Germany could return some of its Benin Bronzes, artefacts looted in a British raid in 1897, as early as this month, under a 2021 agreement signed between Abuja and Berlin.
