July 10. 2008: Apple launched its iPhone App Store, with 500 apps available. As of March 2022, it offered more than 1 million gaming apps, and 3.79 million non-gaming apps

July 11, 1405: China’s Ming Dynasty admiral Zheng He set sail on the first of seven far-reaching voyages that encompassed the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans

July 12, 1920: The Panama Canal was formally dedicated by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, six years after it opened. The waterway links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans

July 13, 1814: The Carabinieri, the national gendarmerie of Italy and one of the country’s four Armed Forces, was established. It polices both military and civilian populations

July 14, 1902: The campanile, the bell tower of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, collapsed. Constructed in the 9th century as a watchtower for the docks, it was rebuilt in 1912

July 15, 2021: Catastrophic flooding in western Europe left more than 200 people dead, with parts of western Germany suffering the worst devastation in decades

July 16, 1918: Russia’s last Tsar, Nicholas II, was murdered by the Bolsheviks. His wife Alexandra, their five children and several of their staff also died in the hail of bullets
