July 3, 1962: Hollywood star Tom Cruise was born. His latest movie, the sequel to Top Gun, took over $100m in its opening weekend at the box office in May. He turns 60 today

July 4, 1802: The United States Military Academy opened at West Point, New York. Originally built as a fort, it sits on strategic high ground overlooking the Hudson River

July 5, 1997: Swiss tennis star Martina Hingis, 16, won the ladies’ singles championship at Wimbledon, becoming the youngest player to claim the title since 1887

July 6, 1785: The dollar was unanimously chosen as the monetary unit for the United States. It was not until 1794 that the first dollars appeared in circulation

July 7,2007: Over 100 million people voted to name the new seven wonders of the world. Among the winners was the ancient city of Petra, in present-day Jordan (above)

July 8, 1497: Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama left Lisbon for a voyage on which he discovered the Cape route to India. He was the first European to reach India by sea

July 9, 1947: Britain’s Princess Elizabeth became engaged to Lt. Philip Mountbatten. The government said it would allow extra ration coupons for her wedding gown
