Ukraine war situation report – day 117
June 20, 2022 - President Zelenskiy predicted Russia will escalate its attacks this week as European Union leaders consider whether to back UKraine’s bid to join the bloc and Russia presses its campaign to win control of east Ukraine.
Leaders of the 27-nation union will consider the question at a summit on Thursday and Friday and are expected to endorse Ukraine's application despite misgivings from some member states. The process could take many years to complete.
Speaking during his nightly address from Kyiv, President Zelenskiy said he and his advisors expect “greater hostile activity” from Moscow, but told citizens that his forces “are preparing” and are ready for any renewed assault.
He pledged to push forward with what he called Ukraine’s “historic” ambitions to join the EU, which were endorsed by the bloc’s executive, the European Commission, last week.
