Wimbledon celebrates centenary of iconic Centre Court

By Chris Dinsdale

July 3, 2022 - Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the season, takes place in London, England. This year, the Wimbledon Championships mark the centenary of Centre Court, the iconic court that has witnessed so many dramatic sporting moments over the years, with a special ceremony on Sunday, July 3. That day also sees regular play included on the schedule for the first time. Middle Sunday has traditionally been used only to reduce any backlog of matches.

The Wimbledon Championships began in 1877 but rapidly became popular and to meet growing public demand the tournament moved to its much larger, present day location in 1922.

Centre Court has embraced the introduction of television and survived bombing raids during World War II. In 2012 it became the first Grand Slam venue to host the tennis competition at the Olympic Games.

Centre Court’s enthusiastic but respectful crowds have been captivated by global icons of the men’s and women’s game, and occasionally get to cheer on a British champion.

The famous court recently underwent a three-year renovation project to expand capacity and install a retractable roof to protect play from the often inclement British weather.
