Ukraine war situation report – day 112
June 15, 2022 - Russia said it will give Ukrainian troops holed up in the Azot chemical plant in Severodonetsk a chance to surrender on Wednesday, pressing its advantage in the battle for control of eastern Ukraine.
Fighters should “stop their senseless resistance and lay down arms” from 8 a.m. Moscow time (05:00 GMT), Mikhail Mizintsev, head of Russia’s National Defence Management Centre told the Interfax news agency.
The Azot bombardment echoes the earlier siege of the Azovstal steelworks in the southern port of Mariupol, where hundreds of fighters and civilians took shelter from Russian shelling.
Meanwhile there is scepticism over whether Russia will provide a safe route for citizens to leave the Azot chemical plant in the bombarded city of Severodonetsk today, after it pledged to open a humanitarian corridor.
