Ukraine war situation report – day 93
May 27, 2022 - The situation in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine is grave, with the deputy defence minister saying fighting is at maximum intensity as the Russians storm Ukrainian positions in several areas at the same time.
Ukrainian officials tell the AFP news agency the Russians have attacked more than 40 settlements in their drive to take the strategic towns of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk.
Artillery has also pounded the north eastern city of Kharkiv for the first time in two weeks, just as life in Ukraine’s second city was starting to return to normal after Russian troops were pushed back from its outlying towns and villages.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged the West to stop playing around with Russia and impose tougher sanctions on it to end its “senseless war”, adding his country would remain independent, the only question was at what price.
