June 12, 1942: Anne Frank was given a diary on her 13th birthday, in which she wrote her account of growing up as a young Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam in WWII

June 13, 1983: The U.S. spacecraft Pioneer 10 became the first man-made object to leave the solar system, after passing Jupiter and clearing the orbit of Neptune

June 14, 1777: The United States adopted the Stars and Stripes as its official flag. The most famous of the early versions was made by Betsy Ross of Philadelphia

June 15, 1389: The Battle of Kosovo, also known as the Battle of Blackbird’s Field, was fought between Serbian forces and the invading army of the Ottoman Empire

June 16, 1884: The world’s first modern rollercoaster opened at Coney Island in New York. It offered passengers a 6mph ride for the price of five cents

June 17, 2021: Three taikonauts blasted off aboard a Shenzhou 12 rocket to become the first crew to dock with the Tiangong space station China is building in low earth orbit

June 18, 1942: Paul McCartney, former Beatle and the world’s most successful composer of popular music, was born in Liverpool, England. He turns 80 today
