June 6 1907: Persil went on sale in Germany as the world’s first “self-acting” washing powder, combining washing and bleaching agents in one product

June 7, 1887: The monotype typesetting machine was patented, in which each letter was an individual piece of metal that could be sorted and re-used

June 8, 1867: American architect Frank Lloyd Wright was born. The Gulbenkian art gallery in New York is a famous example of his unorthodox approach to building design

June 9, 1672: Tsar Peter I of Russia, better known as Peter the Great, was born. He introduced western influence into Russia and founded the city of St Petersburg

June 10, 1922: U.S. singer and actress Judy Garland was born. Born Frances Gumm, she shot to fame in 1939 for her Oscar-winning role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz

June 11, 2012: Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova joined an elite group of players when she completed a career grand slam by winning the French Open at Roland Garros
