May 19, 2022 - Meteorologists are predicting another abnormally high Atlantic hurricane season (Jun 1-Nov 30), forecasting 16-20 named storms and 6-8 hurricanes, with 3-5 of those becoming major hurricanes.

The Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1 and runs until the end of November.

AccuWeather veteran meteorologist and hurricane expert Dan Kottlowski predicts another above-normal year for Atlantic hurricanes.

He and his team believe there is a high likelihood of there being 16-20 named storms this season, with six to eight of them becoming hurricanes. Of those, three to five will develop into major hurricanes which is when they reach Category 3 strength, with winds exceeding 178km/h.

The previous two hurricane seasons were extremely active, with 2020 setting a new record for the number of named storms with 30. The 2021 tropical year was also very active, with 21 named storms.
