Roland Garros men’s preview 2022

By Chris Dinsdale

May 22, 2022 - June 5, 2022 - Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam tournament of the season, takes place in Paris, France. A Spanish sensation is dominating headlines on the eve of Roland Garros -- and it is not clay court king Rafael Nadal. The meteoric rise of Carlos Alcaraz makes him one to watch.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic returns to Grand Slam action after controversially missing the Australian Open in January due to a visa row over the Serbian’s vaccination status. In 2021, Djokovic overhauled a two-set deficit against Stefanos Tsitsipas to take the title.

This year, Carlos Alcarez -- seeded sixth -- is set to provide tough competition for Djokovic, as well as 13-time winner Rafael Nadal and US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. The 19-year-old talent is enjoying a stellar breakthrough season, including winning Masters titles in Miami and Madrid, where he defeated each of the top three seeds (Djokovic, Nadal and Alexander Zverev) in consecutive matches to lift the trophy.
