Ukraine war situation report – day 78

By Jordi Bou

May 12, 2022 - As Finland announces its intensions to apply to join NATO, Ukraine says it has pushed back Russian forces in the east and shut gas flows on a route through Russian-held territory, raising the spectre of an energy crisis in Europe.

The advance north to Kharkiv appears to be the quickest that Ukraine has mounted since it drove Russian troops away from the capital Kyiv and out of northern Ukraine at the beginning of April.

If sustained, it could let Ukrainian forces threaten supply lines for Russia's main attack force, and put rear logistics targets inside Russia within range of artillery.

Already, the governor of Russia’s Belgorod Oblast, Vyacheslav Gladkov, has claimed that alleged shelling by Ukraine has left one dead and six wounded. Ukrainian authorities have yet to respond to the accusation.

In the south, a Ukrainian commander holed up at the Azovstal steel plant, has made a personal appeal to Elon Musk to help his fighters leave the city securely.
