New UEFA Champions League format in 2024
May 11, 2022 - UEFA has approved a major overhaul of the Champions League -- Europe’s primary club football tournament -- with an expanded 36-team league system set to be introduced for the 2024/25 season.
The 2021-22 UEFA Champions League is the 30th season of Europe’s primary club football tournament.
In 2024, the format is set to expand to include a 36-team single league, with the existing structure of eight groups of four scrapped. Each team will play eight league stage ties -- four home and four away -- against different opposition. A total of 189 matches will be played across the season, with an increase of 64 from the current 125-game season.
The UEFA Champions League is contested by the highest ranked teams of the strongest UEFA national associations. It is the top club competition in European football and one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world. The Champions League final is the most watched annual sporting event worldwide.
