May 23, 2021: Dissident Belarusian journalist Roman Protasevich was arrested after his Ryanair flight from Greece to Lithuania was forced to divert to Minsk

May 24, 1822: Antonio Jose de Sucre defeated the Spanish royalists at the Battle of Pichincha, securing the independence of Quito, later to become Ecuador
