Record-breaking temperatures set to rise in India

By Ninian Carter

April 28, 2022 - A life-threatening heatwave has arrived a month earlier than normal to plague India, with highs forecast to approach 50°C on Saturday.

Temperature records across India are being shattered by a heatwave that will see temperatures reach mid-to-high-forty Celsius by the weekend.

Over one billion people will be subjected to excessive heat – about 10% of the world’s population, with night-time temperatures expected to not fall below 30°C.

Prolonged warm nights can be deadly as they limit the body’s ability to recover from extreme daytime temperatures.

A major problem for India’s population is that a large proportion live without air conditioning – creating a life-threatening situation, particularly for the elderly.

Leading up to the recent heatwave alert, March 2022 was India’s hottest in 122 years, with an average temperature of 33°C.
