May 16, 1989: Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev held the first Sino-Soviet summit in 30 years, ending the feud between the two nations

May 17, 1792: The New York Stock Exchange was founded by 24 brokers who signed an agreement while meeting under a tree on what is now Wall Street
