French election result

April 24, 2022 - French President Emmanuel Macron has won a second term in office, defeating his far-right rival, Marine Le Pen.

With 97% of votes counted, Macron was on course for a solid 58.6 per cent of the vote, interior ministry figures showed. Le Pen received 41.4 per cent of the votes.

“Many in this country voted for me not because they support my ideas but to keep out those of the far-right. I want to thank them and know I owe them a debt in the years to come,” the 44-year-old Macron said in a victory speech.

But he faces a divided nation and a battle to keep his parliamentary majority in legislative elections in June.

Five years ago, Macron won a sweeping victory to become France’s youngest president at 39.

Le Pen, who had trailed Macron at one stage of the campaign by just two points in opinion polls, was quick to concede defeat. But she hailed her result as a “brilliant victory”. She vowed to keep up the fight in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
