May 2, 1952: The first scheduled jet airliner passenger service began when a BOAC Comet flew from London to Johannesburg with 36 passengers on board

May 3, 1965: The first major ground combat unit of the U.S. Army arrived in Vietnam. The 3,500 men of the 173rd Airborne Brigade were nicknamed the Sky Soldiers

May 4, 1654: Kangxi, who ruled as emperor of China for 61 years, was born. Under his reign the Qing Dynasty reached the zenith of its social, economic and military power

May 5, 1862: Mexican forces defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. “Cinco de Mayo” street festivals commemorate the battle each year

May 6, 1937: Germany’s zeppelin airship Hindenburg burst into flames after hitting the landing mast on arrival at Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 36 people

May 7, 2000: Vladimir Putin, the former KGB officer virtually unknown in Russian public life until the previous year, was formally sworn in as president
