April 24, 1942: U.S. entertainer Barbra Streisand was born. The highest-selling female recording artist of all time, she is also acclaimed for her work in theatre, film and TV

April 25, 1859: Work began on the construction of the Suez Canal, under the direction of Ferdinand de Lesseps. It was opened 10 years later on November 17, 1869

April 26, 1937: Planes from Nazi Germany’s Condor Legion bombed the Basque town of Guernica in support of General Franco during the Spanish Civil War

April 27, 1828: The London Zoological Gardens in Regent’s Park, the world’s first scientific zoo, opened. Initially intended for scientific study, it opened to the public in 1847

April 28, 2021: U.S. astronaut Michael Collins (centre), who piloted the Apollo 11 command module while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon, died aged 90

April 29, 2021: China launched the first part of its permanent Tiangong Space Station. The Tianhe module contains the living quarters for three astronauts

April 30 1789: George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the United States, taking the oath of office on the balcony of Federal Hall in New York City
