Asia Covid wave as Omicron variant takes hold
March 30, 2022 - Covid-19 infections in Asia have surpassed 100 million, as the region witnesses a spike in cases led by the BA.2 Omicron sub-variant.
According to Reuters news agency, coronavirus infections in Asia have passed 100 million, as the region grapples with a resurgence in cases fuelled by the BA.2 Omicron sub-variant.
The region, home to more than half the world’s population, is seeing about a million new Covid-19 cases every two days – 21% of globally reported cases.
The highly contagious but less deadly BA.2 sub-variant has pushed the figures to greater highs in recent weeks in countries such as South Korea, Singapore and Vietnam.
BA.2 now represents nearly 86% of all sequenced cases, according to the World Health Organisation.
