Russia’s cyberwar may constitute a war crime

By Ninian Carter

March 11, 2022 - Amazon, Google and Microsoft operate huge cloud computing platforms used by governments and businesses. Together they offer a unique insight into cyberattacks being perpetrated against Ukraine.

Very little information is coming out of Ukraine about the mass of cyberattacks being perpetrated against it. However, information disclosed by Amazon, Google and Microsoft – who operate massive cloud computing solutions used by governments, businesses and security services – give an insight to what is happening.

All three tech giants say they are providing cybersecurity support to Ukraine, whose government says it has been seeing “non-stop” distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks by Russian hackers since the invasion began on February 24.

However, attacks are not limited to DDoS attacks alone, with an unprecedented array of malicious activity bombarding Ukraine and civilian and charitable organisations – which could, believes Microsoft president Brad Smith, constitute breaking the Geneva Convention and be considered war crimes.
