Abramovich sanctions halt Chelsea sale

By Chris Dinsdale

March 10, 2022 - Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK government, blocking any potential sale of the club. The Russian oligarch announced he intended to depart Stamford Bridge in March.

On February 22, Roman Abramovich announced plans to transfer “stewardship and care” of club to trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation. However, by March 2, the Russian had revealed his intentions to sell the Stamford Bridge club, attracting interest from several interested parties.

Sanctions imposed by the UK government will now freeze Chelsea FC as an asset of the Roman Abramovich portfolio, and the club must abide to strict rules of a special licensing agreement.
