Britain publishes list of Russia sanctions

By Duncan Mil

February 22, 2022 - Germany halted the regulatory approval of the €9.5 billion Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia, the first in a stream of western sanctions against Moscow after President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into Ukraine’s Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, said Germany would not approve the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline given Putin’s decision to recognise separatist rebel enclaves in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas border area as independent regions.

“The situation today is fundamentally different,” Scholz said. “And that’s why we must re-evaluate this situation, in view of the latest developments.”

Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden issued an executive order last night to prohibit U.S. investment and trade in Ukraine’s separatist regions of Luhansk and
Donetsk.

The United Kingdom hit three high net worth Russian individuals: Close friends of Putin -- Gennady Timchenko, Boris Rotenberg and Igor Rotenberg -- banning travel to and freezing their assets in the U.K.

London also slapped sanctions on five Russian banks -- Rossiya Bank, I.S. Bank, Genbank, Black Sea Bank and Promsvyazbank.
