March 6, 1899: The German pharmaceutical company Bayer patented the headache relief drug Aspirin, synthesized two years earlier by chemist Felix Hoffmann

March 7, 1872: Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, a pioneer of abstract art, was born. His best known works feature the three primary colours on a grid of vertical and horizontal lines

March 8, 2014: Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, with 239 people aboard, vanished after leaving Malaysian air space. Satellite data indicated it ditched far off course in the Indian Ocean

March 9, 1562: Kissing in public was banned in Naples on penalty of death. The ban was less about morality than an attempt to curtail the spread of disease during a plague epidemic

March 10, 1952: The government of Cuba was overthrown by former president Fulgencio Batista. He ruled as a dictator until he too was ousted by the Castro revolution of 1959

March 11, 1918: An outbreak of Spanish flu began. It developed into a global pandemic that killed 50 million people in one of the deadliest disasters in human history

March 12, 2021: King Goodwill Zwelithini of the Zulu nation died at age 72 from Covid-19-related complications. He led South Africa’s largest ethnic group for over 50 years
