By Duncan Mil

February 8, 2022 - Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog,” a revisionist Western, dominated the Academy Awards on Tuesday, with 12 nominations, the most of any film. It was followed closely by “Dune,” which earned 10 Oscar nominations.

“West Side Story,” Steven Spielberg’s captivating take on a beloved musical, and “Belfast,” Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story each received seven nominations. All four of those films are up for the best picture.

Other best picture nominations include director Sian Heder’s “CODA,” Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up,” Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car,” Reinaldo Marcus Green’s “King Richard,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza”, and Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley.”

With “Belfast,” Branagh became the first to earn seven Oscar nominations in seven different categories. Branagh is nominated for directing, producing and writing the original screenplay for the film.

The 94th annual Academy Awards will be on March 27 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. The in-person ceremony will be televised on ABC.
