Boeing wins Qatar Air order, dealing blow to Airbus

By Jordi Bou

February 1, 2022 - Qatar Airways plans to buy 34 777X freighters and 25 737 Maxes from Boeing in a blow to rival Airbus, which is locked in a bitter dispute with the Doha-based airline over alleged issues with the skin surface of its A350 aircraft.

The deal, signed at the White House during a visit to Washington by Qatar's ruling emir, widened the fallout from a dispute between Qatar Airways and Airbus .

The European planemakerearlier this month revoked a contract with Qatar Airways for 50 competing A321neo jets as part of a spiraling dispute that began with disagreements over the severity of flaws on long-haul A350 jets.

Qatar is an important Arab partner for Washington. Home to the U.S.’s largest military base in the Middle East, it played a crucial role in the U.S.’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan last year.

In recent weeks, Washington has held discussions with Doha about whether it could help supply gas to Europe if a Russian invasion of Ukraine disrupts energy supplies to the continent.
