UN calls for $5 billion in aid for Afghanistan

January 11, 2022 - The United Nations has launched its largest ever single-country funding appeal, saying it needs more than $5 billion in aid for Afghanistan to avert a humanitarian catastrophe in 2022.

The UN said 22 million people inside Afghanistan and a further 5.7 million displaced Afghans in five neighbouring countries needed vital relief this year.

The UN appeal launched on Tuesday aims to shore up basic services, ensuring health workers and others are paid directly without funds going to the Taliban, Reuters said.
