World’s longest reigning monarchs

By Jordi Bou

February 6, 2022 - Queen Elizabeth II becomes the first British sovereign to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee -- 70 years of service -- having acceded to the throne on February 6, 1952. She is currently the world’s longest reigning monarch.

Elizabeth is also Queen of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and 11 other Commonwealth Realms.

Second on the list of the world’s longest reigning monarchs is Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, who has reigned for 54 years.

Queen Margrethe of Denmark, who is currently third on the list, also celebrates a notable jubilee this year, having come to the throne 50 years ago, on January 14, 1972.

Queen Elizabeth still has some way to go to achieve the longest ever verified reign. Louis XIV was King of France for 72 years and 110 days between 1643 and 1715.
