Tesla opens Xinjiang showroom as companies cut ties to region

By Phil Bainbridge

January 4, 2022 - Electric carmaker Tesla has opened its 211th Chinese showroom in Xinjiang even as other international companies withdraw from the region due to alleged human rights abuses.

In March 2020, a report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute showed that 27 Chinese factories across nine Chinese provinces used the labour of Uighurs forcibly transported from Xinjiang province.

Xinjiang cotton accounts for 85% of all Chinese cotton, so many global clothing brands were linked to the use of forced labour either directly or indirectly, whether knowingly or not. Numerous companies have since then withdrawn from using these suppliers.
