Lockdowns loom in Europe as UK Covid cases surge

By Ninian Carter

December 20, 2021 - Europe tightens restrictions to curb the spread of the Omicron variant after the UK suffers more than 540,000 new Covid-19 cases in a week.

European countries are introducing more curbs to fight a surge in Covid-19 infections, including lockdowns and stricter travel restrictions, just as people try to enjoy the holiday season.

Weary populations looks set to have the Christmas and New Year holiday period disrupted again, as governments face critical decisions to try and stem the spread of the highly transmissible omicron Covid-19 strain.

To confuse matters further, debate rages over whether omicron produces milder symptoms than previous strains, like delta, and as such heavy restrictions may be unnecessary.
