Gabriel Boric wins Chile’s presidential election

December 20, 2021 - Former leftist student activist Gabriel Boric has won Chile’s presidential runoff election to become the nation’s youngest-ever president on promises of installing a “welfare state” in one of the world’s most unequal countries.

With 56% of the votes, Boric easily defeated his opponent, far right politician José Antonio Kast.

Boric’s victory capped a major revival for the country's progressive left that has been on the rise since widespread protests roiled the Andean country two years ago, Reuters said.
