January 10, 1997: The West African nation of Benin declared January 10 a national voodoo holiday, a year after recognising voodoo as an official religion in the country

January 11, 1922: A 14-year-old boy with diabetes was successfully treated with insulin, a year after it was first isolated in Toronto by Frederick Banting and Charles Best

January 12, 1932: Arkansas teacher Hattie Ophelia Caraway became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. She was re-elected in 1938 and finally left office in 1945

January 13, 1997: Diana, Princess of Wales walked across a live minefield in central Angola to highlight her support for an international treaty banning landmines

January 14, 1972: Margrethe II became the first Queen of Denmark since 1412, succeeding her father, Frederick IX. This year marks the 50th anniversary of her reign
