Verstappen wins F1 title with thrilling finale in Abu Dhabi

By Chris Dinsdale

December 13, 2021 - Red Bull’s Max Verstappen seized his first Formula 1 World Championship with a dramatic final lap victory over Lewis Hamilton, in a contentious climax to their season-long title duel in Abu Dhabi.

Max Verstappen has become the first Dutch world champion with his victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, snatching the title from rival Lewis Hamilton -- the Netherlands is the 15th nation to celebrate the F1 driver’s title.

Verstappen is also the fourth youngest champion in F1 history after Sebastian Vettel (23y-134d in 2010), Lewis Hamilton (23y-300d in 2008) and Fernando Alonso (24y-58d in 2005).

British driver Lewis Hamilton is still aiming to surpass the record of German legend Michael Schumacher if he secures his eighth Formula 1 championship title next season.
