Myanmar court sentences ousted leader to four-year jail sentence

December 6, 2021 - Myanmar’s deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi has received a four-year jail sentence on charges of incitement and breaking Covid-19 restrictions – the first verdicts in cases which could see her imprisoned for decades.

The 76-year-old civilian leader of Myanmar, who was ousted when the army seized power in February, was convicted of incitement and violating Covid-19 restrictions in a trial widely criticised as a further attempt by the country’s military rulers to roll back the democratic gains of recent years.
