October 23, 2021 -- Editors’ note. Hours before the incident, a half-dozen camera crew workers walked off the set to protest working conditions, including gun safety.

The previous Saturday, Baldwin’s stunt double accidentally fired two rounds after being told that the prop gun was “cold.” Jargon for an empty weapon with no ammunition, including blanks, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A crew member was so alarmed by the prop gun misfires that he texted the unit production manager. “We’ve now had three accidental discharges. This is super unsafe.”

According to the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department, the tragedy occurred on Thursday afternoon (October 21) on the set of “Rust” at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a production location south of Santa Fe.

The actor was preparing to film a scene in which Baldwin’s character pulls a gun from a holster -- crew members had already shouted “cold gun” on the set.

Alec Baldwin says he’s cooperating with the investigation of the fatal shooting.
